After reporting just one COVID-19 infection during the fall quarter, Antioch College now has seven active cases on campus.
Six students and one staff member tested positive for the virus over several days late last week, according to college spokesperson Christine Reedy.
Fewer than 20 students are currently living on campus during the college’s November–December block term, Reedy said. That means the outbreak involves around one-third of students presently in residence at Antioch.
One student tested positive on Thursday, another four students on Friday, and the college was informed on Sunday that one additional student and one staff employee had also tested positive for COVID-19, Reedy wrote in a series of emails to the News. The students are isolating on campus, with no other members of the campus community in quarantine for potential exposures.
The governorâs task force announced Friday that the beginning of the winter season for Vermont high school athletics will remain in the pause phase.
In the meantime, Southern Vermont athletic directors are attempting to stay a step ahead by splitting their basketball pool into four divisions.
Practices were originally scheduled to start Nov. 30, but that plan has been on hold since Nov. 24. A tentative Jan. 11 date for season openers has been in limbo for weeks as the state battles COVID-19 outbreaks. Athletes are typically required to participate in 10 practices before playing in a game, leaving not much time for that start date to become a reality.

EAST POULTNEY, Vt. (Bennington Banner via JTA) - The autumn leaves crunched underfoot as Netanel Crispe walked uphill toward the northwest corner of the small cemetery. He stopped and examined a toppled headstone. The last time I was here this was standing up, he said, regarding the weathered, gray stone. At least it hasn t broken.
Crispe brushed away the leaves to reveal a carving at the top of the stone: two raised hands, the gesture used in the delivery of the Birkat Kohanim, Judaism s priestly blessing.
